PRO Bono
Pro-Bono
We take action in “pro bono” legal advisory which, as the Latin expression says, is a service “for the good of the people”. The free counseling and defense in cases of particular social significance does not only help build a practice that serves the community, it also allows the members of our firm to work in sync and practice the ethical values and morals this profession implies. Thus, our social commitment is merely an ethical commitment.
This experience encourages new agreements, especially with NGOs and public entities, which lead to exceptional professional assignments in cases or affairs of public interest.
Whilst American lawyers, for example, own the recommendation according to the American Bar Association (ABA) or the New York City Bar’s ethics, to allocate at least fifty hours of pro bono service a year, in Peru there is no equivalent to such rule. The 7th article of the Ethical Code of the Peruvian Bar Associations states that “The legal profession implies free defense of the poor”, nothing commands the extension of this service to other cases of social impact or a minimum of hours recommended per year for these purposes. Nevertheless, in compliance with the international standards, in 2005 Caro & Associates spent 227 hours and 46 minutes to several free or pro bono defense cases, with the satisfaction of obtaining favorable, visible results.
